The best sample is after 12 hours of fast that is morning sapmle and can be done on serum.
This test is done on Serum or Plasme (EDTA) but not oxalate.
Serum is stable at 4C for 5-7 days and 3 months at -20C.
Avoid freezing and thawing.
Result with EDTA plasma are 3% lower than serum
Cholestrol is absorbed in the diet and synthesized in the liver.It is precursor of steroid harmone and bile acids.
Increased Cholestrol level is associated with atherosclerosis and coronary vessels disease.

•Desired level to prevent coronay disease is <200mg/dl
•Moderate risk is 200-239 mg/dl
•High risk is > 240 mg/dl
Childrn
•desirable level is < 170 mg/dl
•Moderate risk is 170-199 mg/dl
•high risk is > 200mg/dl
•CSF <0.5 mg/dl
•Above 240 mg/dL ——needs treatment
Now adays cardiology association recommend the level to be around 160 mg/dl.
